For people who use Claude every day and keep running into the usage ceiling, the question is no longer whether to pay—it is which paid plan to pick. Anthropic sells two individual tiers above the free plan: Pro at $20 per month and Max starting at $100 per month. The practical difference comes down to how much usage each plan gets per session, how the weekly caps work, and a new monthly API credit that only Max includes. The short version: Pro fits people who use Claude as a daily assistant for writing, research, and light coding; Max is for people who work with Claude for hours at a stretch, especially in Claude Code, and cannot afford to stop mid-task.
We have not measured live usage on each tier on this site; the figures below are Anthropic's published figures, for reference only. Prices shown on the official site do not include applicable tax, and Anthropic notes that price and plans are subject to change at its discretion.
Claude Pro vs Max at a glance
| Plan | Monthly price | What's included | Usage allowance |

How Claude's usage limits actually work
Before comparing tiers, it helps to understand the mechanics, because Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count for any plan. How much a subscriber can do depends on the length and complexity of conversations, the model chosen, and the features in use—so any third-party article quoting an exact number of messages per day is estimating, not citing.
Every plan works on two clocks:
The 5-hour session window. Usage limits reset on a rolling five-hour session window. Hit the ceiling and the options are to wait for the reset, upgrade, or—on paid plans—switch on usage credits to keep going.
The weekly limit. Paid plans add a weekly limit on top of the session window. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to the account; the reset day and time stay the same regardless of when Claude use started or when the subscription began, and the full weekly allowance arrives each cycle. The next reset time appears under Settings > Usage.
Two more details matter for the Pro vs Max decision:
Everything draws from one pool. Activity across Claude on web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code all counts toward the same limits. A heavy Claude Code session in the terminal eats into the same allowance as chats in the browser.
Max has a separate weekly limit for Fable. According to the pricing page's model table, Fable is not available on Free, is reachable on Pro only through usage credits, and on Max plans can consume up to 50% of the weekly limits through its own separate weekly allowance.
Anthropic also reserves the right to limit usage in other ways—such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage—to manage capacity and keep access fair.
What Pro includes
Pro is the plan for everyday productivity. It costs $20 per month billed monthly, or $17 per month with an annual subscription—$200 billed up front, which works out to a $40 saving over the year.
On top of the free tier, Pro includes:
- At least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free
- Claude Code, in the terminal and on the web
- Unlimited projects to organize chats and documents
- Research mode for multi-source reports
- Access to more Claude models, including Opus
- Task hand-off and scheduling, plus features like Claude Cowork and Claude for Microsoft 365
For most individuals—writing, analysis, learning, and moderate coding—this is the tier where the free plan's ceiling stops being a daily problem.
What Max adds on top
Max keeps everything in Pro and raises the ceiling in two flavors: Max 5x at $100 per month and Max 20x at $200 per month, both billed monthly with no annual option on the official site. The 5x and 20x multipliers apply to the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance, and Max also carries higher output limits for all tasks, so long generations are less likely to be cut short.
Beyond raw volume, Max adds three qualitative perks:
- Early access to advanced Claude features. New features and models often launch on Max first before expanding to other plans.
- Priority access at high-traffic times, which matters when work hours overlap with peak demand.
- Monthly API credits—a genuinely new line item, covered next.
Anthropic describes Max 5x as ideal for frequent users who work with Claude on a variety of tasks, and Max 20x for daily users who collaborate with Claude for most tasks.
The new monthly API credits
Since October 2026, Max plans include monthly credits for the Claude Platform, Anthropic's developer platform: $100 per month on Max 5x and $200 per month on Max 20x. To claim them, a Claude Console organization is linked to the plan, and the credits arrive in that organization each billing cycle.
A few conditions from the official docs are worth knowing:
- Credits cover the Claude API, Claude Managed Agents, the Claude Agent SDK, and the playground. They can be used on any available Claude model.
- Credits do not cover interactive Claude Code sessions or extra usage in the Claude apps after plan limits are hit—those are handled by usage credits instead (see below).
- Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover.
- New subscribers can claim credits after seven days on an eligible plan, and Pro is not eligible at all.
On Max 20x, the $200 monthly API credit matches the subscription price on paper—if that much would be spent on the API anyway, the subscription itself is effectively offset. That arithmetic is the strongest argument for Max 20x over Max 5x for developer-heavy users.
Usage credits: the pressure valve on both paid plans
Both Pro and Max subscribers can enable usage credits, an optional pay-as-you-go mode billed at standard API rates. When the 5-hour session limit or a weekly limit is fully used with usage credits enabled, requests switch to consumption billing instead of stopping, and monthly spend limits can cap the cost. Usage credits are separate from the monthly API credits above and apply to both Claude conversations and Claude Code terminal usage.
This changes the upgrade calculus slightly: Pro plus occasional usage credits can absorb a rare heavy week, so Max is worth the premium only when hitting limits is a routine, not an exception.
Claude Code and the API are not the same thing
One confusion worth clearing up, because Anthropic's own Help Center devotes an article to it: a paid Claude subscription and the Claude API are separate products. Claude Code is included in all paid plans and shares the plan's usage pool. The Claude API, by contrast, is billed separately through a Console account with prepaid usage credits—except that Max subscribers now get their monthly API credit to build with. Subscribers who want both the enhanced chat experience and API access on Pro set up Console billing on top of the subscription.
Who should pick which plan
Stay on Free for occasional questions when limit messages rarely appear. Free covers everyday questions, and paying would buy headroom that never gets used.
Choose Pro ($20/month) when Claude is a daily tool for writing, research, spreadsheets, or moderate coding, and an occasional pause for the 5-hour reset is acceptable. Take the annual option ($200 up front, effectively $17/month) once the plan is a keeper—there is no cheaper official route.
Choose Max 5x ($100/month) when the Pro ceiling is hit several times a week, Claude Code is used for real development work, or long uninterrupted sessions are needed for deadlines. Five times the Pro session allowance plus priority access at busy times is the practical fix.
Choose Max 20x ($200/month) when Claude is the primary work surface all day—multiple daily Research sessions, iterative Claude Code work on large codebases, or constant Cowork hand-offs—and when the $200 monthly API credit will actually be used, which alone matches the subscription cost for API-bound builders.
Skip this comparison entirely when buying for a team: Team and Enterprise plans have their own seat pricing, admin controls, and (on Team) pooled monthly API credits, and they are outside the scope of this article.
For people between Pro and Max 5x, a reasonable path is to start on Pro, enable usage credits with a modest spend limit as a safety net, and watch Settings > Usage for a month. If the weekly cap is what keeps stopping work—not the occasional session ceiling—that is the signal to move to Max.
How to upgrade or switch
Sign-up and upgrades happen at claude.ai/upgrade, and the Max tier selector lets subscribers move between 5x and 20x as needs change. Anthropic does not offer standard discounts on individual Pro or Max plans; occasional promotions are announced through its official channels. Prices in supported regions are shown in local currency, and some regions include applicable taxes in the displayed price while others add tax at checkout.
