OpenAI is accepting applications for its Codex Ambassador program, and the deadline is November 1. People who are accepted get a Pro subscription plus Codex and API credits. This isn't a free offer for everyone, though. You have to apply with a short video and examples of your work, OpenAI picks who gets in, and ambassadors have to contribute at least one event or piece of content every month. The program runs for six months, and it's unpaid.

What ambassadors get

According to OpenAI's program page, ambassadors receive "A Pro subscription, plus Codex and API credits." The page only says "a Pro subscription" and doesn't name the plan in full. It also doesn't say how many credits that includes. It says the program runs for six months, and that ambassadors may be able to renew at the end of the term.

Other support listed on the page includes chances to give feedback directly to the OpenAI team, regular office hours with OpenAI's Developer Experience Community team and ambassador swag. For approved events, OpenAI may cover things like credits for attendees, food and drink and hackathon prizes. Invitations to official OpenAI events such as DevDay may be available, but the page says they aren't guaranteed.

The page is also clear that the program is "voluntary and unpaid."

What OpenAI asks in return

Ambassadors have to make at least one useful contribution each month, either an event or a piece of content, and follow the program's guidance. OpenAI says quick takeaways after major feature and model releases count toward that monthly contribution.

You apply for one of two paths. The Event path is for people who run local meetups, workshops or hackathons, and OpenAI says it prefers applicants who have hosted events, especially ones with 50 or more attendees. The Content path is for people who build with Codex and can share public examples of their projects, workflows or experiments as tutorials, demos or posts. Once accepted, you can contribute in both ways.

How to apply

The application has three parts. You fill out the application form, record a short video of about 30 seconds introducing yourself and what you'd bring to the program, and share public examples of your past work, such as event pages, recaps, social posts or videos.

Applications close on November 1. The page doesn't give a time or time zone for the deadline.

Who gets picked

OpenAI says it evaluates applications on relevant experience, examples, program fit and location, taking into account local demand and where more coverage is needed. The page lists North America, Central America, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe as priority regions. You can still apply if there are already Codex groups where you live, but OpenAI says acceptance may depend on existing ambassador coverage in your area.

Students can't apply for now. OpenAI points them to its Student Collective program instead.
