GitHub says in its changelog that, as of October 19, 2026, it has deprecated six models across most GitHub Copilot experiences, including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions. GitHub first announced these deprecations on September 18, 2026.
Models removed and suggested replacements
According to the GitHub Changelog:
- GPT-5.5: switch to GPT-6.1 Sol
- GPT-5.4: switch to GPT-6.1 Sol
- GPT-5.4 mini: switch to GPT-6 Luna
- GPT-5 mini: switch to GPT-6 Luna
- Gemini 3.7 Flash: switch to Gemini 3.8 Flash
- Grok 4.5: switch to Grok 4.7
GitHub asks users to update workflows and integrations to supported models. The changelog notes that Copilot Enterprise administrators may need to enable access to the alternative models through model policies in Copilot settings. Once a policy is enabled, the model appears in the Copilot Chat model selector in VS Code and on the GitHub website. GitHub says no action is needed to remove the deprecated models.
This batch is separate from the November 16 retirements that GitHub announced for other models.
Model policy API is now generally available
In a second changelog entry dated October 19, GitHub says GET and PATCH REST API endpoints for Copilot model policies are now generally available at four levels: enterprises, enterprise teams, enterprise apps and organizations. GitHub says enterprise policies can delegate model control to organizations in organization mode, or to teams and apps in enterprise teams mode. For administrators turning on the replacement models above, this gives a way to check and change model availability through the API instead of the settings page.
