Replit has moved Replit Agent's default experience to OpenAI, according to Replit CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad. Users can still choose Anthropic's models, including Claude, along with other supported models.
Masad first spoke about the change on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, where TechCrunch quoted Masad as saying, "It was a decision based on both cost, partnership, and performance." TechCrunch's original headline for the story was "Replit is no longer working with Anthropic, CEO says." It later changed to "Replit makes OpenAI its default over Anthropic, CEO says." Masad then clarified on X.
What Masad said on X
On October 18, Beijing time, Masad posted the clarification. "To clarify: Replit remains model agnostic. Our users can choose Anthropic models as well as many other supported models," Masad wrote.
The post went on: "What I meant at TC Disrupt is that OpenAI is now our preferred partner powering Agent based on performance, cost, and strength of our partnership." Masad added that Replit believes "in giving our users model choice while optimizing the default experience for the best performance at the best price."
On cost
Replying to that post, a user asked whether picking Claude in Replit Agent costs the same per task as the OpenAI default, or more. Masad answered, "OpenAI models are generally more affordable." The reply doesn't give per-task prices.
Masad's posts don't name which OpenAI models Replit Agent uses by default or say when the default changed.
