At 02:24 Beijing time on October 24, 2026, the ClaudeDevs account on X said Claude is adding support for MCP Tasks and Elicitations. Tasks let Claude give plugins long-running jobs—such as deep research—and report back when they finish. A follow-up post says Tasks and Elicitations are available today in the Claude Code CLI, and will roll out to more Claude products soon, with docs for server authors who want to add them.
Per the Claude Code MCP docs, an MCP task is a long job the MCP server runs itself (for example a report export or a build). Claude’s tool call returns once the server accepts the job, so Claude can keep working; when the job ends, the transcript notes completion and Claude gets the result. You can follow or stop tasks in `/tasks`. A task on a remote server keeps running after you exit; resume the same session to follow it again. The docs mark MCP tasks as a public beta in the Claude Code CLI and require Claude Code v2.1.304 or later. On that floor, the docs say terminal CLI sessions, Agent SDK sessions, and GitHub Actions runs can get MCP tasks; the VS Code extension and the desktop app do not. A call also needs a server that supports tasks on protocol revision 2026-07-28 (HTTP, stdio, or claude.ai connector), among other session conditions listed in the docs.
Elicitations are mid-job prompts for structured input. When a server needs information it cannot get on its own, Claude Code shows an interactive dialog and passes your answer back. Docs describe two modes: form fields defined by the server, or a URL open for a flow that finishes outside the terminal (such as sign-in). A running MCP task can open that dialog; if `/tasks` is open, close it first to answer. Declining or pressing Esc counts as an answer to the server. In a non-interactive session, Claude Code asks the server to cancel a task that requests input.

For MCP Tasks and elicitation dialogs in the Claude Code CLI, we have not tested yet. If you have used them, you can reach the site owner through the contact link in the footer. Related reading: Claude Code 2.1.310 and Claude Code 2.1.309.
