OpenAI runs a Codex for Open Source program for maintainers behind critical open-source software. Per the developers community page and the application form, selected maintainers may receive six months of ChatGPT Pro that includes Codex, conditional access to Codex Security, and API credits for coding, maintainer automation, release workflows, and other core open-source work.
The same community page says that over the past year the Codex Open Source Fund has been about $1 million in support for projects that need API credits, including teams using Codex in GitHub pull-request workflows. Codex Security access is reviewed case by case. OpenAI’s program terms add that benefits are granted at OpenAI’s discretion, that applying does not guarantee selection, and that Codex Security and API credits may need further checks.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and selected applicants are notified by email. The form asks for the email associated with a ChatGPT account, a public GitHub username, and a public GitHub repository URL; applicants can apply for their own project or nominate another maintainer. OpenAI says core maintainers and widely used public projects should apply, and that projects which do not neatly fit the criteria may still apply and explain why.
This program is not the same as OpenAI’s Codex Ambassador Program. For how the application form behaves after submit, and for whether a given repository is selected, we have not tested the flow end to end.
