GitHub’s Changelog dated October 28, 2026 says GitHub Agentic Workflows, an open-source project from GitHub Next, is now generally available. Automation is defined in natural-language Markdown; the system compiles it into standard Actions YAML. Coding agents inside GitHub Actions can handle work such as issue triage, CI failure analysis, documentation updates, and writing tests, while reusing existing runner groups and policy constraints. Workflows can run on GitHub Copilot or a BYO coding agent. Same-vendor Copilot context: GitHub Copilot Adds Server-to-Server Auth in Public Preview.
Safeguards and GA highlights
Built-in safeguards described in the Changelog include an integrity filter for GitHub content access, read-only permissions by default, execution inside a sandboxed container behind the Agent Workflow Firewall, validated safe outputs, and a dedicated threat-detection job that scans proposed changes before they are applied.
Since public preview, general availability also calls out Actions Runner Controller (ARC) with Docker-in-Docker on self-hosted runners, gh aw forecast no longer marked experimental (including threat-detection credits and monthly ranges), refreshed models and engine choices plus gh aw add-wizard workflow templates, a model router that optimizes for task type and difficulty, and stronger agent isolation via Cloud Hypervisor or NVX micro-VM plus enclaves for cross-repository workflows. Those are capability notes from the Changelog for this generally available release, not a lingering public-preview stage.
Plans and license
Agentic Workflows is generally available on github.com for GitHub Free, Team, and Enterprise. Using the default GitHub Copilot CLI engine to power a workflow requires a Copilot license.

The Changelog quickstart covers installing the CLI extension and triggering a first workflow; GitHub Next’s agentics repository also lists prebuilt examples for triage, dependency management, code review, and reporting.
This is a generally available product announcement, not a public or research preview. Client setup and policy details can differ by account. Details follow the GitHub Changelog. For reference only.
