GitHub’s Changelog dated October 28, 2026 says GitHub Design is open-sourcing Replica, an AI prototyping tool, under the MIT license, available now. Unlike generic AI prototyping tools, Replica uses a team’s existing components, patterns, and documentation to guide what gets created. Designers define the guidance; anyone on the team can use natural language in the GitHub Copilot app to create and refine interactive prototypes that reflect how the product actually works. The Changelog’s point: guidance comes from the team’s own system, not a blank canvas. Open-source neighbor on this site: Hi3D 1.0 Is Open Source: Image-to-3D, Formerly Sparc3D.
Capabilities
Prototype with the design system. Feed existing components, patterns, and docs so generated prototypes stay on-brand instead of inventing a separate look. Turn ideas into interactive experiences in natural language, then see, test, and refine beside the Copilot conversation so product, design, and engineering can react in the same thread. Collaborate by publishing to an optional, self-hosted Replica Hub where teammates browse and leave comments. Adapt the open-source tooling and guidance to the product and workflows. For Copilot models on this site, see Which Models GitHub Copilot Offers Right Now, and What Each One Costs.
Availability
Replica is available now as an open-source project under MIT. Local prototypes and an optional Replica Hub for team sharing are both in scope. The Changelog points to the repository at github.com/github/replica for setup instructions. This is an open-source release, not a new paid Copilot plan and not a Fusion/Automations/image-generation story. A different design/creative AI product (not Replica): Canva's First Image Model Craft Hits Dream Lab and a Public API.
Surfaces, Hub setup, and how deeply design tokens are wired can differ by team. Details follow the GitHub Changelog and the public repository. For reference only.
