GitHub’s Changelog dated October 28, 2026 says GitHub Copilot Fusion is generally available. Instead of picking a model for each task, selecting Copilot Fusion lets Copilot route and orchestrate which models it uses. Fusion brings together Project HydraFusion’s multi-model orchestration and Copilot auto model selection’s fine-tuned model selection. Effort levels and workflows
In the model picker, select Copilot Fusion, then choose an effort level:
- Fusion Standard — versatile models for everyday coding
- Fusion High — more capable models for harder tasks and deeper reasoning
- Fusion Max — the most capable models for the most demanding tasks and complex reasoning
When needed, Copilot Fusion can orchestrate models through Single (one model solves the task), Cascade (an efficient model drafts, then a quality check may escalate), or Critique (one model drafts, another reviews, the original revises).
What GitHub cites on Artificial Analysis
The Changelog states that in the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, Copilot Fusion Max scored 60, within two points of Claude Code with Opus 5.5 Max, at about half the average API cost per task, about half as many tokens, and about 40% less time per task. Those figures are GitHub’s citation of that index in the Changelog—not a DigIntoAI rerun of the leaderboard.
Admin controls, billing, and clients
Administrators can control which models Fusion may use and whether Fusion is the default. Fusion only uses models enabled in enterprise and organization model policies; admins can set per-model effective policy for Fusion and disable a model for Fusion without disabling it globally. Any Fusion effort level can be set as the default via Enterprise managed settings.
Fusion usage is billed at each model’s standard rate. For a limited time, users on paid Copilot plans receive a 30% discount on model costs when using Copilot Fusion. The Changelog does not name an end date for that discount. Copilot Fusion is available on all Copilot plans in Visual Studio Code, the GitHub Copilot app, GitHub Copilot CLI, and JetBrains IDEs, with additional clients coming soon. Research-preview selections of auto, HydraFusion, or HydraFusion Max transition automatically to the corresponding Copilot Fusion effort levels.
This is a generally available product announcement, not a public or research preview. Client surfaces, admin policies, and discount windows can differ by account.
