On October 22, 2026, GitHub published a Changelog update for the Copilot usage metrics API. It builds on the September agentic CLI customization metrics. This note is about named customizations—not the same story as counting which clients (OpenCode, Claude Code, Codex, and so on) drive model traffic. For that angle, see GitHub Copilot Usage Metrics Now Count OpenCode and Other Clients.
What changed
In enterprise and organization reports—including per-user 1-day and 28-day reports, aggregated 1-day reports, and day_totals in aggregated 28-day reports—these arrays now list the configured name of a customer-defined item instead of other or custom:
totals_by_skilltotals_by_custom_agenttotals_by_mcptotals_by_slash_cmdtotals_by_plugin
Each totals_by_* list now includes up to 25 entries per record (up from five). Anything left over rolls into a trailing other entry. interaction_count and the distinct_*_use_count fields are calculated the same way as before.
Names are reported as configured, trimmed, and capped at 128 characters. Names that look like file paths stay under other or custom. GitHub also notes names should be reviewed before sharing reports outside the organization.
Coverage and version floors
Names are reported from:
- Copilot CLI (interactive sessions and prompt mode)
- the GitHub Copilot app
- Agent Client Protocol (ACP) integrations such as JetBrains
- the Copilot SDK
Prompt mode, the app, and ACP integrations need Copilot CLI 1.0.97 or later. The Copilot SDK needs v1.0.21 or later. IDEs report names when their agent experiences run on Copilot SDK v1.0.21 or later. Names are not reported from an IDE’s built-in chat telemetry.
Caveats: undercount, history, and access
These metrics come from client telemetry and can undercount activity—for example when clients are outdated or telemetry is blocked. GitHub’s own wording: use them for trends and adoption, not exact accounting. That is not a billing ledger.
Named entries appear starting with report days processed after this release. Earlier days still show other or custom.
Access stays with enterprise owners and billing managers, organization owners, and custom roles that grant View Copilot Metrics. The Copilot usage metrics policy must be enabled.

The live Usage Metrics API has not been exercised against an org on this site. How the named arrays look in real reports, whether every customization identifies itself cleanly, and how the counts line up with finance dashboards—that detail is not available here yet.
