Google Cloud's new Gemini agent is one agent for work that runs inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets and picks a Gemini or Claude model for each task, but most people can't use it yet. According to The Verge and 9to5Google, it is in private preview for enterprise customers, and 9to5Google reports it will reach Workspace customers on select Business and Enterprise plans soon. Google hasn't given a date or a price.
Google unveiled it on October 8 at Gemini at Work 2026 and calls it "a universal agent for work." The pitch is one prompt box for everything: answering questions, knowledge work, creating content and writing code. In Google's words, you "give it objectives, not instructions."
What it does
Inside Google Workspace, the agent works in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Chat, Drive and Calendar, and in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Chat you call it up by mentioning @Gemini. You can also reach it from the web, phones, desktop apps, the command line, Microsoft 365 and Slack. Through an API, other companies can run it inside their own apps as a "headless agent" with no interface of its own.
Because it runs in the cloud, a task that takes hours or days keeps going after you close your laptop, and Google says it keeps one set of memories and context across every device. For multi-step jobs, it creates temporary sub-agents and coordinates steps that run in parallel or one after another. Google says it connects to tools including Confluence, Microsoft Office, Teams, Slack, Git, Jira, Salesforce, ServiceNow, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres and Snowflake.
Gemini and Claude under one agent
If you follow models, the interesting part is that Google treats the agent and the model as separate things. Google says the Gemini agent "runs each job on the model that fits best," and today that means both Google's Gemini models and Anthropic's Claude models, with other private and open models to come. Google says the goal is better quality at lower cost, and that the agent has built-in cost controls.
Google hasn't said which Claude models are included, how often tasks go to Claude rather than Gemini, or how that usage is billed.
Coworker agents
Besides working as a personal assistant, the Gemini agent can act as a "coworker agent" for a whole team. According to Google, a coworker agent gets its own Workspace account with an @agents.company.com email address, a calendar, Drive storage and an entry in the company directory. Colleagues add it to a Chat space or @mention it like anyone else. It acts under its own identity rather than yours, and it only sees what people share with it.
Industry versions
CNBC reports that versions built for financial services and legal work are now in preview, with versions for government, healthcare and retail coming soon.
What's still unclear
Google hasn't published pricing for the Gemini agent, a general availability date, or the exact Workspace plans that will get it. CNBC notes that the launch follows OpenAI's always-on agents, called dots, released in September, and Meta's Muse personal agent, released last month. We'll update this article when Google shares plan details.
