OpenAI’s API changelog dated October 28, 2026 says eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can claim up to $500 per month in free API credits by linking an API organization they own. The same day, @OpenAIDevs posted that the benefit starts for eligible Pro and Business plans. Plan comparison on this site: ChatGPT Plus vs Pro—Price, Limits, and Who Should Upgrade (October 2026). Credit amounts by plan

SubscriptionMonthly API credits
Pro ($100 tier)$100
Pro ($200 tier)$200
Pro ($500 tier)$500
Business Standard$20 per paid Standard seat
Business Premium$100 per paid Premium seat

Business credits are pooled for the workspace and capped at $500 per month. Annual prepaid Business workspaces receive the full year’s grant in one issuance, capped at $6,000 per annual billing cycle. The first grant is prorated for time left in the current cycle.

What the credits do not change

These credits fund paid usage on the linked API organization. They do not increase ChatGPT or signed-in Codex usage limits, and Codex usage through API keys is not covered. Unused credits expire at the end of the billing cycle and do not roll over. For how Codex limits are described across ChatGPT plans, see OpenAI Still Publishes No Weekly Codex Caps, So Here's What Each ChatGPT Plan Gets in October 2026.

Who can claim

An active paid Pro or Business subscription that is at least seven days old is required. The person activating must be an owner of the ChatGPT subscription or Business workspace and an owner of the receiving API organization, using the same email on both sides. Plus, free trials, Enterprise, Edu, and legacy Codex seats are not eligible.

Where to claim

Start in ChatGPT Billing (Pro: Settings → Billing; Business: workspace billing in ChatGPT or the Admin Console) or in API Platform Billing, then link the eligible subscription to the API organization that receives the credits. After activation, renewals can grant credits automatically while the benefit stays available and the subscription remains eligible.
